Life & work
Hypernova and Persian songs
Raam taught himself guitar in Iran. Friends who were looking for a singer invited him to join them because he spoke English well.8
Raam sang with Hypernova in Tehran's underground music scene, where the band played in basements without official permission. He sang only in English with the group, then decided to try singing in Persian.8
He launched his solo career in Toronto in 2011 with Songs of the Wolves, setting lyrics by Tara Aghdashloo to music. For this album, he moved from Hypernova's post-punk toward softer acoustic rock.9105
Back in Tehran
Raam returned to Iran in 2014 and continued recording. During this period he performed in theatre but, by his account, could not hold an officially permitted concert.58 He recorded A Day & a Year in Tehran, then released Until a Thousand and ... in 2017, his last album made while based there.9
Writing for beehype, Ali Eshqi described “A Day Will Come,” from A Day & a Year, as a nostalgic song about once-close friends now living in different parts of the world.511
Storytelling on stage
His father, the environmentalist Kavous Seyed-Emami, died in Evin prison after being detained. In his solo performance Departure, Raam combined his music with the story of his father's death.67
In 2020, he began Masty o Rasty, a podcast in Persian.17 In January 2024, he appeared as a musician and storyteller in Javaad Alipoor's Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World at the Sydney Opera House, as part of Sydney Festival.12

The frontman of New York-based post-punk band Hypernova, which was born in the undergrounds of Tehran in the early 2000’s, embarked on his solo career as “King Raam” in 2011 by releasing “Songs of the Wolves” and changing his style into a softer acoustic rock.
Iranian rock musician and singer/songwriter King Raam, later simply known as “Raam”, released his new single few weeks ago.
After coming back to Iran in 2014, he started new projects and released several singles.
