Life & work
Starting Balzan
Balafshan, a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Rasht, had worked with the city’s indie-rock band Makhoola and had a solo project called Davvar.5 Ramezan had worked with Comment Band, Pulse and O-Hum.11 By April 2018 the two were working under the name Balzan.12 Balafshan said of the partnership: “Balzan isn’t my project or Nima’s; it took shape through our collaboration.”11
The debut album
During 2018, Balafshan and Ramezan released songs they had composed together using Rahmani’s poems.1314 They spent more than a year and a half making their first album, which Javan published in 2019. They launched it in Tehran and Isfahan and performed at its launch in Rasht.15516
Speaking after the release, Ramezan said he was no longer interested in playing solos. While making the album, he had not thought about genres or how many people might listen to it.11
2020–2021
During the stay-at-home period in April 2020, the duo reworked “رنگین‌کمان” with Mahbod Shafinejad.17 That June they released “سرود گم‌شده,” which they composed together using Rahmani’s poem “Pandora.”8
Balafshan and Ramezan recorded a concert at Tehran’s Ruberu Mansion with bassist Arash Saeidi, drummer Bardia Amiri and cellist Parsa Hadi.181 The recording was scheduled to stream online in January 2021.18
Later work
Balzan continued performing in Tehran, including concerts in December 2024 and at Kakh Honar in January 2025.1920 In June 2025 they released “Parandeye Abi,” for which Balafshan set Rahmani’s poem “Namak” to music and sang it. Ramezan arranged the song and played the instruments; Amiri played drums.921 Later that year, “Kissed by the Wind” drew on Rahmani’s poem “Mard-e Bi-sar.”10
